Batter Up!

Welcome to our first edition of the “Batter Up” blog. How do you maintain a winning attitude in the face of multiple losses? How do you adopt a "quit only when you die" attitude? How do you stay positive in the face of adversity? When I went to a Ruidoso Lady Warrior Volleyball game, there were very few fans in attendance, yet they are the number on team in the state, why? Why don’t the parents and fans adequately support our local sports teams? With no major league teams in the New Mexico area, shouldn’t we support our local teams? Please feel free to add your comments and come back often.

Fans are a strange creatures. Most of the time they show up for a winner. The diehard fan will brave the worst weather to see their favorite team and they won't feel bad about booing them if they are playing bad. The next game there they are talking about how they are going to stomp the next opponet.

Parents on the other hand do not have to be fans. I have seen parents show up for an event and not know anything about the game. They are there to support their childen. The strange part about most parents (not all parents) is that once their childern have graduated and move on, so do they. It doesn't matter and the team is good or not, you just won't see them again unless they have another child who plays the game.

I don't have any kids and when I go to the games, I'm almost always asked "Which one is yours?" or "Do you have a kid playing?". I always answer "No. I just came to watch the game." Then I get a real strange look.

I have been in the Warrior Gym while they were winning the district championship or at Horton Field while playing for the state championship. You can't hear the person next to you because of the noise. The sad thing is that I have also been there when times are not as good. The one constant is that parents always show up, and that means alot to the kids.

High school is one of the most inexpensive forms of entertainment around. With tickets for MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL begining at $50.00 and going up from there, I don't see why more people don't spend the $5.00 to go and support their local high school teams.

Like I said "Fans are a strange creatures".
